Regular dental exams and cleanings are essential to helping your pet live a long and healthy life. Dental disease in pets doesn't just cause bad breath, it can affect every part of your pet's body. Bacteria from infected teeth can enter the bloodstream and travel to other organs, where they can cause many problems including kidney failure or heart disease.
Brushing will not remove tartar that is already present on your pet's teeth. At Animal Hospital of Fairview Park, we use an ultrasonic scaler to thoroughly clean all surfaces of each tooth. Next, your pet's teeth are polished to create a smooth surface which will be more resistant to tartar build up. Finally, a fluoride treatment is applied to each tooth to strengthen the enamel.
We can take dental radiographs (x-rays) to reveal hidden dental disease below the gum line. Diseased teeth can be removed to prevent the infection from spreading to others. A professional dental cleaning is the best way to keep your pet's mouth healthy.
